Valentine’s Day Cookie Rush…

It was a baking kind of morning, as the bananas from Sunday’s grocery shop were finally ready to be turned into some delicious loaves of banana bread, my children like to gobble down.  They were bright green when I bought them and have patiently  waited for them to turn…

And while those bad boys were baking away in the oven it was time to decorate some cookies for the Valentine’s Day cookie rush of early next week…

I have learned that decorating a sugar cookie is definitely a learnt skill, and one that can be greatly improved upon with a whole lot of practice.  And that is what this morning was dedicated to with a fresh batch of icing, learning the correct consistency for both flooding and writing, drying times, etc…

I will also say that also with the strength training that I have been doing recently, it has increased my upper body strength and allowed me to hold that icing bag with a steady head.  Results posted below, my only issues is that I like to sample a lot and eating sugar cookies is not a great part of the triathlete’s diet!

The Side Hustle

In the effort to stay at home with my now four year old son I have started to feel the need for some extra income. I recently applied for and got a job back in the culinary industry to bring in a few extra dollars on the weekend when I am kid free. Ideally not what I was looking for but it’s one of this foot in the door and a chance to prove yourself moving forward. A classic case of walking before you can run, and after thinking about it now for a few days it’s absolutely perfect.

However it will only slow the bleeding that has been my bank account the last few months, ideally I want to bring that down to a trickle and eventually start to fill up the federal reserves again. Man I am big on the metaphors today! In comes the Side Hustle! I originally heard this term thrown around in some of the men’s mental health groups I have joined, and more recently on commercials for Uber. #sidehustle

Some friends and I had talked about starting a baking company late last year and this January I finally decided to take the bull by the horn and go all in. It first started with the 6 quart MixMaster mixer I ordered for a screaming deal on Amazon. And then it was Wix.com to set up a website, and finally VistaPrint to get some business cards, car magnets, t-shirts and a large banner which I’ve yet to hang outside my house. Tomorrow’s project for sure.

The Facebook page is up, the Instagram account is active and I’ve even started to boost posts on Facebook which has actually helped bring some more visibility to the site. No orders yet, but as men aren’t we notorious for waiting until the last minute? I have received a few orders already and this morning I went about my normal routine of taking the kids to school, and then making an order for a friend that was willing to help me test out the ability to send these delicious cookies through the mail and see what the end result would be.

I was very happy with the results of my efforts as you can see here…

… however when I went to pack them up the icing had not quite hardened all the way and several of them were squished. I did manage to save four of them but will have to redo the other eight, several of which are sitting at the bottom of my stomach as part of afternoon snack.

There has been a learning curve involved with his business venture for sure and at this point I am just hoping to sell enough cookies to cover off my investment and then make a few dollars. If it can be turned into a profitable enough venture to allow me to stay at home full time then I will consider that a Hugh WIN, however there is a lot of work and a lot of cookies between now and then.

If you have a few moments I invite you to look at the site as advertised below. Not looking for orders but rather feedback, ease of navigation, products you would like to see kind of idea. Swim lessons are wrapping up and then it is off the the 25th run in a row. Now that’s Hustle!

Happy Birthday Austin

I have a confession to make, I forgot it was my son’s birthday today.  I knew it was coming up and for some reason my mind told me that it was Friday, when it fact it was today.  Mom had made a FaceTime call this morning, which she never does and soon as the words “Happy Birthday” came out of her mouth my heart sank.  Oops, I didn’t even realize what day it was.

It was rather sad and sobering fact to me to have forgotten, as we had an awesome cuddle session in the morning while lying on the couch and it would have been nice to sing him Happy Birthday while we cuddled… I suppose it’s a good thing that he is just turning four and it went over his head that I had forgotten.

And I must also confess I am totally unprepared for a birthday today, with it still being so close to Christmas perhaps in future years just grab him a couple of extra presents and leave them in my closet for today.  I will also be spending the afternoon making a SpiderMan birthday as I like to do every year for my kids when they make their request.  It’s a good thing that the Bulk Barn rents out shaped cake pans and I am hoping that a SpiderMan head is among their selections… if not I will have to get creative.

Jennifer requested a Princess Peach cake this past year, and well let’s just say that Mario Kart is a few years behind the times and finding anything Princess Peach was several missions.  I ended up having to get creative and make a Pink Castle cake along with a Princess Peach themed background on a large cake board.  Turned out pretty good in my humble opinion.

So today we will head out shopping, and I will enjoy every second of my day with Austin as currently he is running around and having a great time with Kristi screaming giggling and tickling as they run around the house playing Monsters…  Argghhh I’m gonna get you…

I have this giant calendar on my fridge, and the lesson that I have learned today is to write it down, perhaps set a reminder on one number of the pieces of technology that I possess.  Or perhaps I need to slow things down in my life and make sure that I focus on the truly important things in my life, like my son’s birthday.  #fail 🙂

And Away We Go!

I love all of the firsts in life.  The first kiss, yeah you all can close your eyes and flashback to that very special moment when your heart was racing, you slowly leaned in and then the magic happened.  Ahhh….  well life if full of the first time, the first one, it’s about being brand new, exciting and nervous, what is to come next?  What are you talking about Edward??

Home with the boy? Yes please!

I’ve mentioned in a few posts that I have decided to start a bakery company as I had a few requests for Sugar Cookies over the holiday season and it seemed like a good idea to make a little bit of extra money, with the goal of allowing me to stay home with my kids if things become successful over the next few month.  My son turns 4 in a few days and will not be starting school until September, and I would to spend the next nine months chasing him (and all my other kids) around the house during the week.

If you are going to do something it might as well be all in.  I had sat around waiting for a friend of mine to take the lead on this idea, come up with a website while I sat around and waited for orders… last week my brain was like dude, what are you doing?  You want this to be successful then you need to make it happen, and that is exactly what I did over the course of the last five days.  In fact, I am a little impressed in what I’ve got accomplished this week.

Last Sunday I signed up for my own domain name, registered an online shop and began construction on a website, I added a domain email address and set up a Paypal account to receive payments.

Monday I completed deleted the premade template the website was built upon and created my own from the ground up, I have lots of experience making websites and ran a successful online comic book store 20 years ago when the Internet was much different than it is today.  Also on Monday I set up all the required social media links, Facebook, Instagram, etc…

On Tuesday I visited Vista Print with the intention of getting business cards made, and I walked away with not only those but car magnets, a banner to hang outside, t-shirts to wear when I exercise at the gym at the same time creating a great company logo to bring everything together.  I also made (with help from the artist) an order of 36 cookies with the FreeMason logo on them as well as several promo cookies to help advertise Valentine’s Day which have been absolutely amazing.  Thanks Kristi.

This continue on Wednesday as these works of art take a little time to bring together, and while I bake a mean cookie I have to bring my icing skills up to the next level!  That is what this weekend is going to be all about.  After I take my kids back to mom’s house I will hit up the gym and get in run #13 and then home to ice up some more promo cookies and work on another skill set I need to posses.

Thursday I spent taking pictures of the promo cookies we created and put together some Valentine’s Day promo ideas and then added all this information to the website.  In those last 2 days I also ran 20 km at the gym… the afternoon was dedicated to updating and testing the site as well.  Thursday afternoon all my printed material came in from Vistaprint (they were incredibly fast) as I had placed the order two days ago and delivery wasn’t supposed to be sometime next week.

IMG_4044.jpgThe logos are on the Jeep, the business cards are in my pocket and I’ve worn the shirt to the gym for one of my long runs.  I’ve turned into corporate America on a very small scale, and while on a personal level I don’t really like the IN YOUR FACE advertising, I do recognize that it is a necessary evil for any small business to get the word out.  Such is life.

Friday morning I put together a Word Document outlining our prices and delivery options for Valentine’s Day as I plan to hand delivery all of my orders to that special someone on February 14th.  Patrick, my head of sales will handle the Greater Toronto area and I am going to hit all the Simcoe County/Barrie orders.  We have some awesome Heart Shaped boxes ready to go and it is going to be awesome.

The rest of Friday I spent making sure all the links and the pages on the site were correct, updated shipping options, tweaked a few pictures and updated the code to make it match the PDF flyer I created.  I signed up for a Boost package through the service provider I am using, and started looking at Facebook and Instagram and ways they can boost my page and site now that it is ready to roll.

I put my little ones to bed, started to set up my board to play some X-Wing miniatures space combat game, very similar to Dungeons and Dragons from my youth when it happened.

I got my first order through the site I had spent a week setting up.  There is was the first.  I suddenly became very nervous for a few minutes as everything that I had done over the past week kind of sunk in, there it was.  My very first order.  My business was officially open for business.  North West Bakery is open for business!

100 Day Run Challenge Update…

North West BakerySo for the first time in maybe forever, although I know I did some crazy things while Ironman training a few years ago, today I did my second 10 km run in as many days. I had every intention of doing a nice and easy 30 minutes job on the treadmill at the YMCA while the kids ran around the gym downstairs with there hair on fire (not literally).

Perhaps it was the fact that I actually only ran 9.96 km yesterday and not the full ten that kind of bugged me today. I have OCD and I felt I needed to fix that, or perhaps it was the fact that I was wearing a t-shirt advertising my start up baking company for the first time…

North West Bakery

And I figured that the longer I ran the more advertising I would be getting. Is it wrong for me to have parked myself in front of a few out of shape folks sweating away and working hard? And here comes some in shape triathlete running for an hour advertising a bakery company right in front of them.

I ordered a bunch of items from Vista Print including a banner for the outside of my house, business cards, car magnets for my doors and the aforementioned t-shirts… I have high hopes that this business venture allows me to remain at home longer with my younger kids to continue to enjoy he magic of their childhood.

Tomorrow will definitely be no longer than 30 minutes or 5km, which ever comes first!

Does anyone have any tips for muscle and leg recovery that I might use? After all I still have 89 more runs to go!

Just Getting It Done

Morning all, so I wrote quickly yesterday morning about feeling a bit overwhelmed about the day ahead, and I am very happy to report that I got it all done, and then some! The morning was filled with driving around, and my boy was just super well behaved in the car for a couple of hours, his favorite reward being a Kinder Egg which he attacks with such enthusiasm every time he gets one.  He is such a sweet little boy, wanted to buy his big sister Emily a heart shaped ring from the dollar store and then gave it to her later in the day, warmed my heart so much to see that.

When I got home it was cookie production time, as I mentioned that I am starting up an online baking company, North West Bakery which has been such fun to start up.  I found some awesome Valentine’s Day boxes to pack up cookies, and  made some promo cookies as well that I am going to photo and add to the website today.  My order from Vista Print arrives today as well so I can turn my Jeep into a mobile advertising platform, business cards and t-shirts to wear at the gym tonight when I work out.  Going to be fun!

10 days straight running

While Austin was down for a nap. I decided to hit the road for a lovely 10km run through the streets my subdivision on the 10th day of my 100 day run challenge.  I was doing a Nike Run audio guided run and I humble suggest that any runners with an Iphone download the app and give it a try.  Remember to turn your phone to airplane mode to avoid any phone calls as for some reason it kicks off the audio track during the run which has only been slightly annoying.  I find the talking, the verbal coaching in your ear to be a great motivator, and I will try it again at the gym tonight.

After school was filled with icing cookies, and playing with my two young children.  It was wrestle time and we had so much fun rolling around the couch, having pillow fights, and letting them pummel me and believe you me, pummel me is the right word.  Horsey rides, tickle fights and playing Monsters (basically chasing them around the house making monsters sounds) and they loved it.  Mom came and picked up the little ones, and I settled into the couch and a good movie and had a nap…

IMG_3906.jpg
Millenium Falcon and Darth Vader’s Tie Fighter!

After a little despite, I engaged both of my older girls to end the day.  Megan came home from the mall and was so excited to tell me all about it, share some videos that she took, showed off the 1000 page book that she bought.  She even let me explain to her how to play the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game that I have been dying to play, and then offered to play with me.  I should have jumped at the chance, by I was down to my last little bit of energon for the da and knew I would be napping soon.  We have rescheduled the space combat mission for this weekend, perhaps even tonight.

And then I talked with Emily about what is going on in her life.  I challenged her to make a plan of action over the next few days to help her both feel better and get her school life back on track.  She has been steadily improving the last few weeks and I want to see her take that next step.  I need to remember to focus on the GREAT things that she is doing, and try not to focus on the negative things.  I believe she will respond better with positive reinforcement when it is so easy to point out those negative things we all see and don’t like on a personal level.

I’ve gotten a bit away from writing about my daughters, as I learned a real valuable lesson about sharing too much especially when you have neighbours that think they know better than you do when it comes to raising your own kids.  An absolute humbling lesson about a hand reaching out while sliding a knife into your back.. I digress as I choice to focus on the positive and the things that I have control over, right?

Today’s agenda is fun.  Lot’s of playing with Austin today, in and around some website construction usually when he eats lunch, and naps.  Swim lessons start up again tonight so back to the YMCA and then a nice little workout afterwards (run 11) and then home for dinner and a movie(s) night, first with the little ones and then another with my teenagers.  Want to start a tradition each week watching one of the Marvel movies in order leading up to the release of Infinity War in May.  This will give us the chance to talk about life, the day and whatever else comes up…

I hope you all have a great day as well!

2017 Top 10 ~ My First Trip to Wrigley (#2)

I am a huge baseball fan, HUGE.  It started when I was a kid and my parents would take me to old Exhibition Stadium in Toronto to watch the Blue Jays play before they moved to the Skydome, now named the Rogers Center.  I have had the absolute pleasure of seeing some magical things over the years (much like some of my WWF wrestling experiences).  One of earliest memories was watching Dave Stewart throw a no hitter vs the Blue Jays back in 1990 in one of the first games in the new stadium.

I also had the pleasure of seeing the first World Series game played in Toronto in 1992, Game 3 vs the Atlanta Braves, and I was there (yes I really was in section 542) when Joe Carter hit his shot heard round the world at the end of Game 6 to win back to back World Series Championships for the Blue Jays.  I lost touch with baseball for awhile after the 1994 strike which cancelled the World Series that year as I found it hard to relate to squabbling millionaires who could agree on how many millions of dollars each would make.  And it wasn’t until several years later and a World Series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks that sparked my interest once again as each game went into extra innings and was on the edge of your seat exciting.

Fast forward to 2015 when the Blue Jays finally made the playoffs once again and I had the privilege of seeing that first game and the Texas Rangers and game 5 of that series with the ridiculous 7th inning that culminated with the Jose Bautista bat flip.  I honestly think I am one of a handful of people that saw in person the Joe Carter home run and the Jose bautista Bat flip…  Two summers ago I had one of the best days of my life when Joe Carter came into my Keg after his charity golf tournament, and I was able to cook him dinner and sit down afterwards and share a beer and several stories.  (Definitely a post for another day!)

Up until this past summer I had only ever seen a Toronto Blue Jay home game, and a few days after my 45th birthday and 2017 Top 10 ~ Canada Day, My 45th Birthday (#6) my friends and I set off an the first leg of my Summer Road trip down to Wrigley Field in Chicago, this would be followed up by a trip to St. Louis and Busch Stadium as well.  There are times when my friends don’t make things easy on me, and the start of this trip was no exception.  One of the guys along for the ride, Adam needed to pick up his passport on the morning that we were leaving, literally from the office.  Fun stuff!

Let’s backtrack a bit first shall we?  When I first got the idea of a road trip I knew that one of the things on my bucket list to do was see a baseball game at Wrigley Field.  So this was always a center point of the trip to which all things were eventually planned around.  The first task was to pick the game we wanted to see and in turn get the best tickets possible, prices being in US dollars the tickets were going to be the most expensive part of the trip.  With this in mind I decided to turn this into a camping trip, as a KOA campground outside of the city would only cost about $40 for all of us and a great way to save money.  After all I already had all the camping supplies needed, which I picked up earlier in the year from Wal-mart.

Taking a look at the baseball schedule and the distance from Chicago, St. Louis was picked as the other city we would visit on this trip.  We decided to stay at a hotel in St. Louis that was right beside Busch Stadium, literally.  So within a few days I had planned a great four day trip to both cities, and with Jeep in hand we were all set to have a great time.  The weather on this trip couldn’t have been more perfect it was sunny and warm the entire trip and when we left Vaughan and headed out the roof on the Jeep was screaming to be taken off.

Along for the ride were my Keg friends Ryan, Jason and Adam all big baseball fans, and all in our Keg fantasy baseball league.  Passport issue aside we were on our way and the first stop was of course at the duty free where we loaded up on supplies, crossed the border and continued on towards Chicago. As soon as we crossed the border, the roof was peeled back and we continued on our way with the wind blasing on our hair and great tunes on the radio.

This was my first real chance to fly down the interstate with the roof down for an extended amount of time. At first it was great and if I had been alone it would have been perfect, but with a group of guys and the radio blasting and trying to have conversations well it made things a bit challenge since I could hardly hear things with the wind blasting around. Not to mention the sun beating down as well! We had no issues on our drive down into Chicago and arrived at our campground with plenty of sunlight left in the late afternoon.

IMG_0757.jpg

My tent literally takes two minutes to set up which is awesome, and we missions into the nearby town for a WalMart run to collect a few needed items. Everything in the states is either big or extra large as evident by the giant bag of ice we got. Ridiculously big. Back to the campsite Ryan had started a nice fire and I set off to make dinner. Before leaving that morning I prepared several foil packets of vegetables and brought alone Keg steaks to roast over the open flame. I have to say this meal was absolutely delicious and the first time that I cooked steaks on an open flame.

That night it was songs by the campfire and lots of drinking. God bless the duty free shop, however the bottle of Honey Jack that was passed around turned out to be a bad idea for a few of the group. On a personal note I tried to be Dad at one point in the evening or should I say the few early hours of the morning. We basically stayed up all night and saw an amazing electrical storm at about 4am off in the distance. Shortly after that I went to bed while the other stayed up, after all I had been driving all day and was exhausted and I knew we had a big day planned for Wrigley the next day. I said as much to my group about winding it down and getting some rest and those words of advice fell on deaf ears so as best I could I tried to get some sleep. Next time I will remember ear plugs and a sleep masks for the early morning sun…

At some point in the morning I awoke and restarted the fire to get breakfast going. Bacon cooked over the fire along with scrambled eggs and coffee was mandatory. I had concerns about how best to make coffee at a campground… and my solution ended up being a large thermos and the two pots of coffee I brewed the day before and brought along. I simply reheated them in a pot over the fire the next morning and things were absolutely perfect. Especially with a little Baileys mixed in.

The stadium was about an hour away from our campground as it was situated on the outskirts of town and on the closer side to St Louis as we need to be up early the next day and head out for the late afternoon game in St Louis. Driving in to downtown Fhicago was amazing, the visuals of that city are so beautiful and I would highly recommend a visit to this great US city to any traveller. Cubs game are a very popular thing and all of the folks in and around the stadium are always ready for game day. For example the local Newspaper Taco Bell shut down their drive thru operations and sells all of there parking spaces to Cuba fans as does almost every local business. We parked at a gas station in a little tiny space for $20 bucks it was great. Have Jeep can park anywhere…

We joined the throng of people walking down towards the stadium and almost every single house along the way was decorated with some Cub flag or merchandise especially from the World Series victory the previous year. Updated n seeing the stadium for the first time was magical even just from the outside. There was an electricity and atmosphere in the air that was second to none. I have goosebumps even writing about it now six months later.

As you can see from my video walking down the walkway and up the stairs and taking in the visual of the stadium for the first time I will never forget. They have done a terrific job of renovations over the past few years yet at the same time maintaining the feel feel of an old school ballpark. The ivy on the walls, the brick work throughout the stadium and how close the seats are to the field of play are absolutely breathtaking.

We had great seats down the left field line in the second row, along with an aisle seat which is always mandatory being six foot five inches and needing the leg room. The Cubs were playing the Pittsburg Pirates on the afternoon and we had done our research on the starting left fielder for Pittsburg, John Jaso who rocks the worst hair in baseball, full length dreadlocks.  Jason has always been a big baseball heckler, verbally launching into the opposing players in a clean but very humorous way.  The goal is to taunt the player so much that it affects his performance on the field and today we sure did.  It was the first time I’ve joined in on the fun, and a few times Jaso pointing in our direction as to say are you the guys riding me?  He mis-tossed balls into the crowd and made some questionable plays in the outfield as well.  I have also seen this backfire first hand in Toronto when the player Jason was heckling hit a home run and his manager promptly removed him from the game so he couldn’t get yelled at anymore.  Most players don’t react but when you can get them to crack a smile, acknowledge your taunts, or the ultimate affect their play, mission accomplished.

When the game was over, many bears had been consumed (I wasn’t driving back) and the Cubs had won the game, each home win is followed by the playing of Go Cubs Go and it was epic to listen to 40,000 fans sign along.

The ride back to the campgrounds was festive, we had a great dinner of burgers cooked on the campfire and the party continued to the wee hours of the morning.  And after a few hours of sleep, we packed up our campsite and headed off to St. Louis…

While the weather the last two days had been just perfect, hot and sunny.  We got a little sunburnt at Wrigley with all the sun and the outdoor stadium, the Saturday was even hotter.  I believe it got as high as 36 degrees that day, as we got closer to St. Louis we could see the arch from miles out and passed right by it on our way to the stadium.  It was a much different feel to this ballgame than in Chicago.  I think based on where the stadium is placed, the fact that it was Saturday and there was no downtown traffic or feel to the place, maybe it was because we were two hours before the game started and most people hadn’t arrived yet.

I parked beside another Jeep in the parking lot and marvelled at the difference of the two, mine had 5000 km’s of road trip on it covered in bugs and life, the one beside us looked exactly like mine did after it rolled off the assembly line (brand new…)  We took our time as we headed over to the stadium, commenting on how HOT it actually was and no of us looked forward to another day sitting out baking in the sun.  As fate (and my good planning) would have it turned out not to be the case.  I had gotten tickets in the outfield of Busch Stadium in what was referred to as Club seating.  The only thing I knew for sure is that is came with a pregame buffet.  It was a five hour drive from our campground to St. Louis and we were all looking forward to the spread.

What we ended up with was way better than I could have ever imagined.  Turns out we had our own private box!  When constructing the stadium they put in an entire strip of boxes lining the outfield, each with it’s own buffet, private bathrooms AIR CONDITIONING common room where they served the food, and COMPLEMENTARY Bud and Bud Light on tap.  We were all in heaven.  We dig in like it was out last meal and it was absolutely delicious!  Even the flat Bud was tasty but the bet part was the Air Conditioned room you could sit and eat, before headed down to your seats.  Each box had about 15 seats in the outfield and they were all out of the sun.  It was perfect and if I ever go back to St. Louis to see games again I would sit in this section, hands down.  It was cheaper by about $100 than the Wrigley ticket and added so much more.

We were all inten on heckling the New York Mets players in the outfield and talked about possible chants on the way down… ha ha.  It was going to epic, that is until we found out we sitting right behind 5000 New York Mets fan!  I am not kidding, bus loads of fans had come down for this game and covered three or four sections right in front of us.  And they were ready!  They had chants for all there home players and based on numbers and well organized to be loud and proud.

IMG_0864.jpgIMG_0865.jpg

We quickly realized that we were vastly outnumbered, but the four of us remained undaunted and took on those 5000 Mets fans.  We piggybacked there calls adding our own twists, we tried to heckly the players (and were often quickly shut down) by louder more numerous voices.  We had an ace up our sleeve as the baseball gods decided that St. Louis would take the day and nothing quiets a crowd more than when your team loses.  Mets fans had nothing to cheer about as the game windied down as they were losing.  There most popular chants was when there were two strikes on the batter, and they would have shaked their arms in the air with a low but growing….. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, STRIKE HIM OUT!!! chant.  Well we stole that and in the ninth inning the four of us were repeating that chant as the Mets batters struck out to end the game.  Countless Mets fans were looking up at us in both amusement and disgust, and I kid you not far too many St. Louis fan asked us to stop thinking the throng of Mets fans were going to climb the barricade to get us.

I almost forgot to mention, that after the first inning Ryan comes back with a large can of beer, not draft but a real can.  I ask where he got it, and his replay was like Dude, there is a complimentary bar outside.  Everything is free.  Open bar?  What?  Throwing singles at the bartenders I was out there every inning trying another tasty creation.  Just off the hook amazing, and amazing what liquid courage will do for you when taking on 5000 mets fans.  Smart move booking a hotel that was right beside the stadium as we were able to walk home after the game.  St, Louis won, and many a Mets fan talked to us on the way out commenting on our Moxie and the fact we went toe to toe with them all.  They had to hang their heads in shame and have a long losing bus ride back to NY, we were in celebratory party mode as the home team won again.

We had planned a fun evening out and around St. Louis hat turned out not to be the case, the cumulative effect of the Honey Jack the night before and open bar of today, well we almost lost Ryan that night.  I’ve never seen someone as sick as he was and he was a write off and truthfully most of the next day.  Having stomach issues and the mix of all the fun we were having was a bit too much, I’d lost my driving partner and was now looking at a 13 hour solo mission behind the wheel the next day to get back to Canada.

It didn’t help that our hotel was double booked our room and instead of the two king sized bed I had booked months before we ended up with double beds and a crappy view of another building instead of the stadium view I had also booked.  I guess we should have checked in when we first got to St. Louis as opposed to waiting until after the game.  Lesson learned.  We were offered a $150 tab for food at the hotel and we went to town and had a feast in our room that night.  We all crashed early as it was going to be a long ride back the next day, and I had the lofty goal of rolling out right at 8am.

The Dad instinct in me took over and I was up at 7am, waking up the rest of the crew and getting the car packed to head out right around 8am.  And we were rolling back to Canada, there was some talk of stopping in Detroit on our way home to see them play Cleveland, and had Ryan not been out of commision were most likely would have seen a third game….  we did have a few adventures on this drive home as well.  The first thing that comes to mind was the symmetrical endless rows of corn that we saw, and I mean they were identical for miles and miles and miles.  Each stalk was exactly the same size, the same colour, the same height it was rather creepy to be honest.  Genetic energeneriier had clearly come up with a super strain of corn and it was planted forever to maximize growth and yield, this led to conversations about allergies, about how the body only needed to digest and process one strain of corn as opposed to countless varieties back when this was naturally grown.  It warmed my heart to later see in Canada corn fields that were in all shapes and sizes…

Mis adventures number two came when we stopped for gas in the middle of the drive home, I had a magnetic phone case that held both my phone on one side and credit cards, driver licence (and passport) on the other.  During this gas stop I used my phone and tossed the case onto the hood of my car where it stuck.  We piled back into the Jeep and I promptly forgot it was there, and there it stayed for about 2 miles before the force of wind and the speed we were going lifted it off and across the interstate behind us.  Quickly slowing down from 70 miles an hour in a Jeep on a gravelly shoulder was interesting as that car shimmies and shakes coming to a stop.  And then watching three guys run a mile backwards looking for all my documents that had been scattered to the wind.  This added about 30 minutes to our time as it was quite the hike to get back to where the phone case was, to find everything which luckily we did.  It was a scene right from the movie Vacation…

Even with the long drive, the border crossing and the drive back into Canada I was able to meet my older girls in Vaughan for pickup at 9:30pm after setting off from St. Louis at 8am that morning.  I did every second behind the wheel, the Jeep was a perfect road trip car and I was proud of not only getting everyone home safe, but for planning and executing the trip of a lifetime.  I sit here now with a big smile on my face, looking forward to planning this summer’s trip.  I imagine a few cars headed somewhere caravan style, a larger campground for us all and some great comandare and male bonding time.  I have been so fortunate to have some amazing experiences in my 45 years on this planet, and this road trip ranks right up there with the best of them.

Thanks for reading, it was my pleasure to write.

2017 Top 10 ~ Baking, baking and more baking (#7)

Despite the occasional box cake mix, and lets get the joke out of the way right off the bat, I love to bake.  It comes from being my mother’s faithful kitchen assistant growing up and helping her in the kitchen, that love of baking has really blossomed over the past six months.  There was a run there for a few years when I was really into making cupcakes, and would often involve Emily and Megan in these projects.

It only makes sense to me to serve up my children delicious creations from my own kitchen as opposed to store bought delights filled with an endless number of preservatives.  Jennifer and Austin also love to help out in the kitchen everytime that we make cookies and it is another great way to spend time together as a family.

The one item I seem to make most these days is Banana Bread, and I’ve been slowly perfecting the recipe over the past few months.  Most weeks I make at least two, and a few times I’ve made as many as five in a single week.  The kids devour them (I give them to neighbors) and even as I type this Megan is asking when I am making another one as it is her favorite snack…

Beauty of a blog post, it can be paused and picked back up (banana bread made, and in the oven!)

Ahh now I can smell the deliciousness in the air of a banana bread baking away in the oven, amazing.  Always a great smell in the house when I have something cooking.  The other reason that I love baking so much is that I find it very relaxing and a chance to practice some mindfulness.

I can turn everything off and forget about the rest of the world for a few minutes when I am making a tasty treat.  The whole process can be equated down to Love vs Science , a post I have recently written about.  I have always been a very scientific baker as it helps sooth my OCD a bit, however I have recently been schooled in the ways of baking with love (not the love ingredient I previously mentioned) but actually LOVE and being slightly less concerned about perfect measurements across the board.

After some debate I had to agree that cookies made with love rather than pure science seemed to taste a bit better when eating them.

Some other items I have been working at perfecting are homemade pies and Sugar Cookies.  My favorite pie would be a good old fashioned Apple Pie with a slight taste of cinnamon.  Granny Smith apples seem to work best based on their texture and slight tart taste which plays great against all the sweetness of the sugar you would add.  I’ve also made my first Peach pie, Cherry pie, from scratch Pumpkin pie and even a Chocolate Pudding pie a few weeks ago.

I am also in the process of working on getting an online baking company up and running with the help of Patrick and Kristi we have had a few orders and I look to dedicate a section of my blog site dedicated to this venture next week.  This has been focused around Sugar cookies and Kristi has taught me a tremendous amount about how to properly ice these cookies, as well as continuing to bust my chops about using a boxed cake mix.

2017 Top 10 ~ Survivor Series Dinner (#9)

I’ve had the idea of making a special meal all made with love for several years now, in fact I’ve dreamed about it on several occasions.  To every single detail I knew exactly how this meal would go.  And while it took several years, and the right timing to actually get around to making it I don’t believe it could have gone off any better.

It was actually perfect…

The preparation for the event started on Saturday with all the baking that needed to be done, first off it was two different types of cookies, a banana bread and my first all love Apple Pie.  My goal is always to make sure that items made with love, actually taste good, not to know that even love exists in the product.  Home runs were hit with this baking my friends.

On Sunday’s menu was a full Turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  Again never having made a turkey dinner filled with love before, I was slightly concerned about the deadly combination of tryptophan and love knocking out all my guests.  It turns out I would be partially correct with this assumption.

The stuffing was loaded with love butter, more crumbled on top and underneath the bacon layer.  As this would all melt into the turkey and help form the base of the gravy that was still to come.  This whole meal was done on the dreams and thoughts I had over the past few years, I didn’t consult a single recipe and just whatever felt natural to me.

The gravy came out perfect with the pan drippings of the turkey, plus a roux made of love and might have been the most potent item on the menu that evening.  The vegetables were sauteed in love oil, and the mashed potatoes turned out better than I could have imagined.  The whole meal from top to bottom was perfect…

We lost Corey early on, almost right after we finished dinner.  Patrick also needed a short winter’s nap and Ryan and I were the sole survivors.  There were a lot more friends that joined after they finished working to help with the leftovers and to enjoy the warm out of the oven Apple Pie and coffee sweetened with love honey to end the night.

I could feel the after effects of this meal for a few days afterwards, perhaps I was just basking in the glow of a job very well.  Ryan won the wrestling challenge that night as we always try and predict who wins each match and got to walk out with the ceremonial title belt.  I was able to cross something off my bucket list of things that I always wanted to do.  This meal also marked the last time that love was ever a part of my life, and it was a great way to close that chapter for ever.

The Emotional Roller Coaster

It was that kind of weekend for me, filled with the highest of highs and at the same time the lowest of lows.  These kind of weekends make life very interesting, at the same time can make life difficult to handle.  Things started earlier this week when I had to ask Emily to leave my house, giving her until Friday to find a new place to live.

customers-emotional-roller-coaster

I had given her a reasonable list of house expectations, and while at first she didn’t even want to look at or consider my list, to a few days later saying that what I was requesting was not unreasonable.  As she is telling me the words that I want to hear, she is at the same time going to school but skipping every single class.  Her words were definitely not matching up with her actions, and when I called her out on it she got angry, pulled back emotionally and did not come home from school on Friday afternoon.

I am trying to work with Emily and have her face her problems, her issues as opposed to running away from them as she has started to do recently.  I ran and tried to hide from my own problems for too many years, I hid from them buried under an addiction and I could now see my daughter doing the same thing.  It took me the better part of this year to finally exact life altering, and lasting change for the better.  This blog being a huge part of that change, the sharing, the not feeling alone, unburdening myself of the giant ball and chain that I have been carrying around for many years.

Sitting around on Friday night, after telling my daughter that she was no longer welcome in my house was incredibly hard for me to do.  But I did it, I packed up all her clothes, makeup and personal effects placing them into the garage and letting her know she could come and pick them up whenever she wanted to.  That night was difficult, many different emotions ran through me as I sat there and thought about the last few years, and how things had come to this.  It was a tough night.

I can proudly say that not one time did I think about returning to my addict ways, to numb my mind and hid from my problems with marijuana.

Saturday morning started the turn upwards towards those aforementioned highs.  The morning started with some fun with Jenny and Austin, picking up Megan and starting my weekly 3 hour drive to return various kids to various mom’s.  This drive was one of my absolute favorites as Megan and I talked for the entire two hours we were in the car together, not once did she pick up her phone and get distracted.  We talked about an eclectic range of topics that included: her first crush, the Christmas dinner and the dress that she wanted to get, Tom Holland aka Spider-Man, her sister Emily, basketball, volleyball and a million other things…  It was such an easy back and forth and upon dropping her off I was on the receiving end of several hugs and kisses goodbye as I headed out on my return trip to Barrie.

I stopped at the YMCA for a great 2 hour workout, after signing up for an Ironman race, I have found it has given my workouts an extra layer of focus, and taken them to the next level.  I have already started to the see the results in the mirror which is always a bonus, vain yes I know…  This time around in the Ironman triathlon the goal isn’t just to cross the finish line it is to cross that finish line strong and at the front of the field.  I have no illusions of winning the race but a time of or under five hours and top ten in my age group would have me literally jumping for joy again.  Have 7 months of great training ahead!

When I was done the gym I headed home to an empty house, as is often the case on Saturday and Sunday’s.  I full custody of my four children pretty much Monday through Saturday morning, and then get to live the single man’s lifestyle on the weekends.  You know hanging out at bars, and hitting on the ladies… throwing wild and crazy parties in my kid free house… actually none of those things at all.  I am the opposite of 99% of men, whom are kid free on the weekend, I was going to have a glass of wine, listen to some music, dance around my kitchen and do a whole lot of baking.

My friend, Tiffany was having a bit of a rough day so I invited her over to help and to help take her mind off things going on in her own life, and over the course of a seven hour conversation I learned a whole lot more about her.  She carried most of the conversation and I think just needed to share and unload some of the crazy events going on in her life.  Just sitting there listening, and I mean actually listening to another person is such an amazing thing,  She had my undivided attention, not interrupted by checking cell phones, a tv on in the background or any combination of kids running around.  We eventually did get around to baking and that was another whole adventure.

516nqRVGfGLI know that Tiffany wasn’t impressed when I pulled out a boxed cake mix to make some cupcakes, and when I saw the expression on her face I kind of got nervous.  From my point of view I do almost all of my baking for my kids and using a box cake mix is simple, quick and easy, makes a decent cupcake as well.  I think when I mentioned baking she was thinking, flour, sugar, eggs, etc.  To be honest it threw me off my game and I ended up making the worst batch of cupcakes I ever have made.  They were too big, the frosting was far too sweet, the candy canes I put into the icing you couldn’t see, and the colour scheme was all wrong.  Just not happy with the finished product…

Looking back, I was nervous, and the results showed that.  This was the first time I had ever baked with another person.  And I got into my own head a little bit, we both talked and laughed about the results and what had gone on over the last hour.  In good news, the banana bread we made was absolutely delicious.  I sent that home with Tiffany to enjoy and heard it was quickly consumed.  Before heading off to bed I thought about things and what I would do differently the next time we got together.

That turned out to be Sunday!  The sugar cookies I had made a few weeks ago, has led to another job and five dozen Christmas sugar cookies and I was going to make another batch on Sunday to both perfect the recipe and send to school today with Jennifer for her class to enjoy.  I asked Tiffany to help me out on Sunday, as on Saturday we talked a lot of baking, and icing and how much she enjoyed the whole process.

Sunday was the exact opposite from Saturday night.  There were no nerves involved whatsoever, and I was totally able to be myself.  On came the awesome 80’s tunes, one of my favorite songs, Doesn’t Really Matter by Platinum Blonde to which every single time I hear this song, no matter where I am have to air drum the drum solo midway through the song.  I found myself singing out loud, which I never have done in front of another person before, as I do not have a voice for it at all.  I played my best air drums using a few wooden spoons in my kitchen, it was epic.

Learned how to “ice” cookies today.

Over the course of several hours we talked, we laughed and we had a great time.  Tiffany and I worked very well together in the kitchen,  instantly had an unspoken language while making these cookies.  Several times throughout the process we were helping each other without having to say a word.  It was like nothing I had ever experienced before working with another person.  A communication without speaking a very rare thing indeed.

From the low’s of Friday night, to the learning curve of Saturday to the pure fun that I had on Sunday all came to a head Sunday night as I drove Tiffany home and picked up Emily who had finally decided that she wanted to stay at my home and we had our best talk in a long time while driving down to pick up Megan from her mom’s house.  Sitting in the car with Emily, just being open and honest and not being afraid to talk to my daughter was the most powerful hour of my weekend.  I truly believe that in that hour I was able to reconnect with Emily in a way I had been searching for these last few months.

I wasn’t nervous or afraid to open up and bare my soul to her, to share with her the experiences from my past that parallel exactly what she has been going through.  I believe we came to an understanding about each other during that car ride and have taken the first few steps towards regrowing the bond that should exist between a father and his daughter.  We still have a lot of work to do, together, being able to talk to be open, to share with each other one day at a time.  One thing at a time.  Baby steps, one after another and over time we will have climbed that mountain.  Together.

I’ve learned so much about myself on this journey, this weekend in particular was one of learning, growing and most importantly being myself.  Even with small periods of nerves spattered throughout, I was able to adjust, to learn on the fly and to grow one small step at a time. It taught me that I could take what I experienced one day and could directly be applied to the next day making it a wonderful experience.

I will leave you all with this thought for the day, each day that passes for me is one step further away from my old life and one step closer towards the man I am truly am meant to be.  It’s still is amazing to me, this journey has been so wonderful.  Each day presents to me such beauty and wonder in every situation that I have the pleasure of experiencing both good and bad.  I will continue to learn, to grow, to evolve from each experience and shape my life, the life of my children and those I am lucky to call friends so much better.
